About UL16

UL16 is an initiative of the South Australian and Queensland Synods and Newlife Uniting Church. UL16 has grown out of the passion, energy and history of a network of evangelical leaders in the Uniting Church (EL250). For more than a decade EL250 has provided annual gatherings for congregational leaders in larger, evangelical Uniting Churches to engage in peer-learning, mutual support and encouragement. 

UL16 will seek to continue to build on the legacy, ethos and theological foundation of El250, aiming to increase its impact for the benefit of the Uniting Church and its mission.

UL16 will be a three-day conference featuring worship, plenary input from our special guests, opportunities for peer learning, networking and time to enjoy the many delights of a Gold Coast ‘winter’.

UL16 will be the first of a series of annual Uniting Leaders conferences that seek to grow and develop healthy, growing leaders for a healthy, growing church.

Who Is UL16 For?

UL16 is for any lay or ordained leader in the Uniting Church passionate about evangelism and mission and seeing the church grow healthily. UL16 is focused on growing leaders who in turn help grow local congregations. While open to all, it has an unashamed and unapologetic emphasis on the local congregation.


UL16 is being coordinated by the current EL250 leadership team, consisting of Rev Stu Cameron (Lead Minister – Newlife Uniting Church), Pastor Glen Schweitzer (Pastor – Chapel Hill Uniting Church), Rev Kynan Brookes (Senior Minister – Hope Valley Uniting Church) and Rev Nigel Rogers (CE0/General Secretary – South Australian Synod)

UL16 is being hosted by Newlife Uniting Church, a large regional worshiping community that meets across six weekend celebration and two locations.  Newlife has extensive community programs and outreaches. www.church.nu

Senior Leaders Intensive

The Senior Leaders Intensive will commence with a dinner session on Thursday September 1st and continue Friday 2nd September with 3 sessions facilitated by Steve Lacy. 

Steve works for “Leading Teams” and has experience in facilitating leadership team development for organisations of all shapes and sizes. Steve’s love for Christ is obvious, his facilitation is insightful and his focus is on ensuring that people understand the mechanics and dynamics of building an excellent team.

A senior leader includes: 

  • a lay or ordained leader in full time ministry who leads a team of staff and/or volunteers in a local congregation.  Typically they will lead in a church with more than 150 in weekly attendance. No more than 2 leaders from one congregation can register for the senior leaders intensive.
  • a presbytery or synod leader. 

Guest Speakers Mark & Karen Wilson

Mark is the Director of Ministries for the Baptist Union of WA. Being a visionary leader and an excellent communicator, Mark speaks to thousands of people in Australia each year.
With over 25 years experience as a local church Pastor and Denominational leader, Mark has great insight into the needs of people from all walks of life. His genuine concern for people is displayed in the value he places on each individual and his desire to see them achieve their goals in life and ministry.

Karen is the Executive Minister of Riverview Church, the largest church in Perth and one of the largest in Australia.  In that role she oversees all weekend services and events, worship ministry, production, media and communications and youth and children’s ministry. She is also the WA State Director for Baptist Women’s Ministry and leads the team who run the FRESH Conference in Perth. Prior to her current role she was the Executive Director for the GLS Asia for 5 years and worked for The Willow Creek Association. This role took her to nearly every Asian country as she led leadership teams to produce the Global Leadership Summit in nations for the first time.

Before their present roles, Mark and Karen co-pastored a large Church of Christ in WA.

Guest Speaker Steve Lacy

Steve Lacy joined Leading Teams in 2015 and is based in South Australia. Steve came from a facilitator role at Rising Generations, designing and facilitating leadership and character development programs in the education sector. Prior to this role, Steve was a business manager for advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi and a teacher for students with autism. Steve has completed degrees in Advertising and Marketing Communications, and Secondary Education and Teaching.

Steve has natural leadership ability, is a gifted facilitator and is deeply passionate about seeing people and teams reach their potential and continually grow his leadership capacity. Those who know Steve will speak of his natural ability to coach and encourage people. He is known for his genuine, warm personality and love of people. He can inspire, challenge and empower and has the ability to bring people together to work in a team environment.

Travel Subsidies

Thanks to the generosity of the South Australian & Queensland Synods, travel subsidies of up to $300 are available for conference attendees residing outside the South East corner of Qld. ( Brisbane & Gold Coast regions ).  The general criteria for granting subsidies is as follows:

  1. Rural Delegates: Support can be offered to those in rural congregations to cover the cost of getting to the nearest major city and then to the Gold Coast.  It acknowledges the importance of having rural church leaders attending UL16.
  2. Multiple delegates from one congregation:  A congregation that seeks to send a ministry team or numerous delegates could be given a total of $300 for 2 delegates (ie. $150 per delegate)
  3. Special circumstances: Financial support will be given to cover travel and/or accommodation costs in special circumstances.  The Organising team reserves the right to determine what a special circumstance is.  However, examples include members of the same family attending the conference or extreme distance needing to be travelled eg. Perth to Gold Coast
